Wells have been appearing in my meditations of late, so I did a bit of research about wells. Besides being a source of life-giving water, a well is a powerful symbol of the communication between the conscious self, the inner self and the hidden riches of the unconscious. The element of water symbolizes dreams, visions, and hidden knowledge and a well is one place where these can be accessed or encouraged. A well is a dark and silent place offering a connection and communication between below and above, bringing water from the dark, hidden and silent depths of secrecy and contemplation where words have no power, into the upper world of illumination, perception, understanding and wisdom.

Water also can symbolize clarity, purity, aspiration and nourishment. A well provides these things to those who approach and make the effort to dip a vessel into its waters. A well also symbolizes the person who braves the darkness in order to bring into the light that perception, understanding and wisdom in the name of spiritual development.

The appearance or shape of a well is pretty much universal. Styles of architecture and forms of political structures change and evolve over the years but the shape of a well has remained the same since ancient times and is an easily-recognized archetype.

Thus, a well can be seen as a direct connection to sacred energies moving between the membranes that separate the realms. Wells are one of the potent sources of sacred energies within our physical realms. They can be naturally occurring or deliberately or accidentally created; they can be found in our physical world or within our dreams, meditations and visions.
