quite as drastic. I grew up with devote Catholic parents. My sister became a Nun when I was 5 years old. Whenever my parents didn't have a babysitter which was at least once a month, I had to go to the convent and stay with the nuns so my sister could babysit me. That went on for 7
years until my sister fell in love with a priest and they both came out of their orders. While I was at the convent the nuns would always try to get me to join. That was never going to happen. I barely felt attached to the Catholic religion. A God that punished never made sense. I also saw plenty of things between the nuns and priest that went again their vows of celibacy so what was the point. When I was in HS, I was walking to the city bus, missed the school bus, and the walk was about about an hour. I was tired and saw a new bookstore that had opened with tables. So I originally went in just to sit down. It was a metaphysical store and I was 17 and very intrigued. I spent an hour with the owner and she explained so much to me about Wicca and I was hooked. It all made so much sense.
However,
I still had devote Catholic parents at home. I kept a couple of things in the drawers. Started with candle spells. It was the late 70s so they wouldn't think of anything if I lighted a candle. I went back to the bookstore on a regular basis, but sadly the shop closed within the year.
College was an eye opener, took a class about different religions and I realized I felt so disconnected from the Catholic religion, but nothing pagan was being taught. I just did my own research into Wicca and chose that. Unfortunately, I got married to a pretty devote Catholic and had to abandon Wicca during that time. After the divorce, I found my way back to it. I was practicing on and off, because at one point I had to go back home with my parents to help me with my son while I worked. After I moved out, I picked it back up for good, although I never told anyone in the family.
