Yesterday, while I spent time with my nephew, (we were watching his foster brother's rather confusing first game of flag football.) he told me something about himself that I never knew existed... let alone that he had. He has something called Aphantasia. This is the inability to summon images of things in the mind. Say someone told him to imagine eating an apple. He knows what it tastes like. He knows he has eaten them. He can not put a picture of one in his mind. He does not remember dreaming since he was a little boy. Or at least before puberty set in. So as we were talking about it, and how it affects his D&D game. He does much better with in person D&D than a play by post option that we ended up doing with one of the games we were in. He needs things to be described exactly in order to understand what is going on. We also talked about how traditional forms of meditation don't work for him either, so we started brainstorming about what he could do instead. This morning, I found this article for him, and I wanted to share it here too. Because for one thing, it gives alternative forms of meditation that could be adapted for what we do. For another, I have had several people tell me they have a hard time with visualization. This could help. I can think of several ways this could be adapted for things that we do all the time here.
